It's not always easy to drink the recommended 1 to 1.5 liters of water a day, but in hot weather, it becomes a necessity for our bodies! Over 60% of our body is made up of water, so we need to be well hydrated to avoid fatigue and keep our body functioning properly. If you're having trouble drinking your 1.5 liters of water a day, here are a few tips to help you avoid dehydration.
Drink before you're thirsty
As we know, some people, such as children and senior citizens, feel less thirsty. In summer, air conditioning can also diminish this first warning signal sent by our body. In fact, a 1% bodyweight deficit in water is enough to impair cognitive and physiological functions. So even if you're not really thirsty, force yourself to drink regularly, whatever your age.
Buy a reusable bottle
More ecological than a plastic bottle, reusable bottles and water bottles are now stylish and practical to carry. And they can also be filled with flavoured water or iced tea.
Eat water-rich foods
When the weather's hot, we tend to turn naturally to raw vegetables and fruit. Quite simply, because they're made up almost entirely of water! For example, tomatoes contain 94% water and watermelon 90%. These foods rehydrate you, while filling you up with fiber and vitamins. Just perfect!
Flavoring your water
Are you a fan of sweet drinks? Then forget about ice-cold sodas, which pack in a maximum of calories without hydrating your body. The same goes for alcohol. Instead, you can flavour your water with sugar-free syrup or lemon juice. It's also easy to make your own iced tea, either by brewing hot or by buying special tea bags.
Use a straw
Bars serve us our drinks through a straw, simply because we drink more and faster. So it's easy to apply the same trick at home. And of course, reusable straws are preferable to plastic ones...
Drink at set times
If you still can't reach your "quota" for the day, force yourself to drink at set times. A large glass of water in the morning, two glasses with each meal, one mid-afternoon and one in the evening. And to make sure you don't forget, you can even set alarms or download an app like Aqualert or Waterlytics. This will enable you to set reminders and track your water intake on a daily basis.
